A pioneering ideas competition by the Wirtschaftsagentur Wien aims to reclaim honest craftsmanship within the urban context, calling all producers, manufacturers and creatives in Vienna.

The high levels of urbanisation and an overriding global nature of our society today paradoxically inspire a quest for the salvage of traditional methods of production or of inherited design processes, concentrated in the dense city environments. Aimed at supporting locally sourced and produced commodities or services, this experimental synergy between the old and the new, proposes an enterprise which requires the dedication of the cosmopolitan makers in the city to reinvent their heritage for the modern age. A task of this calibre is bound to turn out a lot of innovative, ingenious and beautiful proposals, once released to the minds and hands of the creative thinkers. The Crafted in Vienna competition is an open call for those who wish to look beyond the mainstream consumer nature of the city, and see behind it something much more raw, lasting, and sustainable.



Crafted in Vienna invites participation in three categories, encompassing concepts, production processes, as well as services. The three main themes- Production, Distribution, Awareness, are however, hardly constricting, as cross-disciplinary submissions are more than welcome. This joined-up concept is resonant all throughout the initiative, collaboration being at the heart of it. The makers are especially encouraged to approach their ideas in terms of making the most of the people resources in the city, establishing partnerships, sharing infrastructures, or building new technologies together. Highlighting the usefulness of networking in an urban environment, Crafted in Vienna urges that the rediscovery of traditional craftsmanship forms be re-thought and improved, all based on our ability to share knowledge, information, or expertise.

Accepting propositions concerning designed goods produced in the city, sustainable production facilities, concepts for branding or distribution of urban production, the competition truly gives free rein to applied creativity with a positive effect on the city, its inhabitants, traditions, cultures, and trades. Crafted in Vienna will choose and award the three best entrants and their ideas, with an additional audience prize based on an online public vote. The deadline for submission is mid- September, so study the details and criteria carefully, and give becoming a Vienna maker your best shot!
